First Presbyterian Church encourages people to explore, question, and discover faith in God through Jesus Christ. One of the ways we do that is through adult studies and the women's and men's groups.
Adult Study
Money has great power in our lives and, when used wisely, helps us meet our goals, provide for our needs, and fulfill our life purpose. But in recent years, many of us ignored this when managing and spending our money. We found ourselves spending tomorrow’s money today. The result of all of this was not greater happiness and satisfaction, but greater stress and anxiety.
Enough: Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity is an invitation to rediscover the Bible’s wisdom on prudent financial practices. Find the keys to experiencing contentment, overcoming fear, and discovering joy through simplicity and generosity. This study could change your life by changing your relationship with money.
Sessions include:
- When Dreams Become Nightmares
- Wisdom and Finance
- Cultivating Contentment
- Defined by Generosity
The book and DVD from the class are available for anyone who would like to borrow them.
Mary Circle
The Presbyterian Women's group meets September to May on the third Wednesday of the month at 7pm. We gather at members' homes for devotions, study, and fellowship. If you would like to come to a meeting, contact the church office and we'll give you a ride! The women of Mary Circle serve funeral dinners and participate in mission projects. As a fundraiser, we provide meals for the church's Men's Brotherhood meetings.
In December, together with the Men's Brotherhood, we host the Annual Church Christmas Party. In May, the men cook for us at the Mother/Daugther Banquet.
Our current mission project is to make blankets for children in Afghanistan. A niece of one of our members is a Marine serving in Iraq, and she requested blankets and other supplies for the children there.
This year we're studying Confronting the Controversies, a DVD study that looks at the most controversial issues of our times from a Biblical perspective. Issues include: The Separation of Church and State, Creation and Evolution in the Public Schools, The Death Penalty, Euthanasia, Prayer in Public Schools, Abortion, and Homosexuality.
Men's Brotherhood
The men of the church meet every fourth Wednesday at 6:30pm at the church. We have dinner and hear a program, which has ranged from a presentations on Malawi, Africa and Thailand, to hearing about the local YMCA, a tour of the Appanoose Country Historical and Coal Mining Museum, and a hymn-sing of popular old songs by our own Bill Thom.
In December, we join with Mary Circle to host the Annual Church Christmas Dinner, and in May we cook, serve, clean up, and entertain (or provide entertainment) for the women at the Mother/Daughter Banquet.
